eCommerce SEO: Increase traffic to your website

Ranking Factors for ecommerce SEO websites are not like other pages. 100% of your conversions come from product pages. Using content marketing you can boost your eCommerce websites Domain Authority. Backlinks are what do this. So how do you get more traffic to your eCommerce website? In this article I want to share with you affordable eCommerce SEO techniques and some advanced SEO techniques for optimizing your ecommerce WordPress website.

eCommerce SEODomain Authority

The best ecommerce product pages still need verified backlinks. Backlinks are Google’s top ranking factor. So with ecommerce sites how do you get people to link back to your product pages? Well, you can’t. People want to link to valuable content not a product.

Without content creation you won’t get those backlinks and build your sites domain authority. In fact Amazon very rarely have links pointing to their product pages. They have posts that talk about the product and a link to the product in the post. Bottom line, use content marketing to boost your ecommerce websites optimization.

Modifiers in Title Tags

Title tags are the main titles you see on the search results page. In order to get more clicks which increases your CTR there is a method to help. Consider adding modifiers with the target keyword in your title tag to optimize for long tail searches. I need to state that this is not the place for “click baiting” that will get you banned or penalized. To see how it’s best used to stay within Google’s user experience guidelines look at ads in the results page. If you reference online ads from Amazon and others you’ll get an idea of what’s acceptable.

modifiers title tagCommon words people use when searching for products in Google are:

  • Cheap
  • Deals
  • Review
  • Best
  • Online
  • Free Shipping

So your title tag can be like this example for Noise Canceling Headphones:

Change to: Best cheap noise cancelling headphones – headphones r us.

Best and Cheap are modifiers. Now I know you’re thinking “but I don’t want to have people think I’m cheap or my product.” But think about this, which is more important? What people think or conversions? Closed sales and happy customers that refer new customers are what matters most.

The idea of using a modifier like “cheap” doesn’t matter if you are making money over your competitors. Also remember if you are in a market that is competing over price, it’s not an issue. And if you are not competing in a market over price but quality, it’s still not an issue as word of mouth travels fast still. A good product doesn’t need a lot of SEO or marketing.

Remember it doesn’t matter what you say about your product, it’s what others are saying. The best SEO strategy can be beaten by a verbal referral every single time. And that referral is less money spent on advertising.

Magnet words

Click Thru Rate (CTR) equals more clicks on your product pages. Which equals more traffic. Thus more sales conversions. Google uses CTR in their algorithm as one ranking factor. It makes sense to look at your CTR when wanting eyes on the products. More traffic to product pages, the more money your going to make. Even the best SEO company should tell you this tip to get better rankings for your products.

Examples of magnet words:

  • Guarantee
  • X% Off
  • Lowest Price
  • Overnight Shipping
  • Sale

Example: Slow Cookers 25% off – xxxx

These keywords are guaranteed to trigger a readers attention. Think about how you shop online. Therefore it makes sense to advertise with your online marketing in the same way. Search isn’t about stuffing keywords and hoping for more SEO traffic. It’s about the users and helping them find the product or information they are looking for online.

Longer Product Descriptions

Google is trying to figure out what your page is about. Longer content helps users better understand your product. And longer content ranks better. But writing over 1,000 words for one piece of content is difficult and time consuming. It might require you to higher someone for it. Especially if your writing is not that great. I know that we all think we are wordsmiths. But there are online tools that can tell us otherwise.

Therefore focus on your 10 most important product pages that rank or are popular. Then write 1,000+ words about that product on a post. Be sure to add the target keyword 3 – 5 times in that content. This is not a reason for keyword density. It’s simply placing it there to have users remember and Google to see it. So both know what you are selling and the post is about.

Website Architecture

This is how your pages on your website are arranged. Your webmaster can help you with this. This helps Google find pages on your site and users. So keep every single page no more than 3 clicks from your home page. If you have more than that then you dilute your Domain Authority. make is easy to find for users your content and Google. If you have more click this does not help CTR or your ecommerce SEO. CTR comes from the search engine not on your site. Petsmart is a great example of minimal clicks. They use the maximum of 1 or 2 clicks.

Product Page URL length

Short URLs rank better than long URLs. Long URL’s are better structured. But don’t go back and revise your current page URL’s because that will cause a bunch of other problems. Just do this in the future when creating new product pages or content. If you start changing your URL’s that are long now, you’ll create more 301 redirects that could signal Google to a unhealthy and unorganized website.

So for example of a short URL on your site try this:

mysite.com/pet-food/organic-dog-food

NOT

mysite.com/category/pet-food/the-best-organic-dog-food-on-sale-here
