How Hashtags Work

How Hashtags Work

Twitter and Facebook hashtags (#) are not that tricky to use but not its easy to start a trend.

Think of them like tags on a blog. Every post you create within a category has a tag associated with it to better filter out certain keywords that were used in discussion of that blog post or posts.

What is trending?

Trending is when your hashtag, #ilove502 for example, begins to be used by everyone across social media and commented with this tag. It’s something that you would like everyone to see that is within that similar conversation using that same very tag.

Why use a #hashtag?

Studies show using a hashtag actually increases engagement if you are promoting a topic or creating a conversation online. Users on social media are following a hashtag rather than you or other profile.

How many is too many?

Again studies have shown that one or two are better. However it isn’t saying that three is bad but is better exposure occurs with only one or two within a tweet.

Creating a Twitter post with multiple hashtags is a bad idea because your messages isn’t really understood.

How to start a trend

This is a million-dollar question because social media is made up of users. Starting a trend is really up to them unless you want to buy and promote one, then you can do whatever you want all by yourself. Just remember not to do a paid trend like #cowboysUK which didn’t go very well.

However, you’re still at the mercy of whether or not people wish to participate.
