WordPress SEO Tips And Google Updates

I’ve blogged before about SEO and WordPress, but I recently realized I’ve not blogged about WordPress SEO tips. So here’s a quick post about that. Matt Cutt’s was a featured speaker at a WordPress WordCamp San Francisco ’09, and this to say about WordPress SEO tips:

WordPress Is Not A Search Engine Optimization Cure

In other words, WordPress will not solve 100% of your sites SEO issues. But it will solve up 80-89% of issues in aiding a site to become crawl-able by the search engine. If your site cannot be crawled you will not be listed in the index when people search for you. As of recent updates from Google and with mobile, everything is critical to be mobile first. Google doesn’t have two algorithms (one for mobile, and one for other devices). It’s mobile first, or you are not getting indexed.

Yoast SEO and All In One SEO

Both are great SEO plugins, but I prefer Yoast as it has a record of performing better and it’s 100% free. All in one requires a purchase to export or import settings from another site, not so with Yoast. Authorship

In 2014 Google made Authorship a big deal. Your WordPress website has a blog so you already have a powerful tool to increase your sites footprint to help your SEO. Basically part of your SEO strategy can be in your own hands. But not if you don’t know what you are doing. Content that is poor quality won’t be read or indexed.

But be careful who is an author (or writing for you) on your sites blog. Authorship will establish you, to Google, as the owner of content that gets published on your website. If your guest author (or blogger) is a spammer or is linked nefariously to spam, then it can be devastating to your sites rank.

Take care as well what you are writing about. If it’s not useful, it’s not going to move the needle much for you.
